Upstairs at L & I: We have a new class space upstairs ... an amazing space with north light. It allows us to spread out, to have bigger classes, more classes and less distractions. Here's the place to experience this fun, portable, nontoxic media! Participants can sign up for one or both days. Reserve your place in advance...pay on the day of the class at 315 N. Bullard Street. Each class is from 10am-4pm with a lunch break. Bring: a lunch and color photos with 3 distinct values. If you already have them, bring watercolor brushes. Bringing a board approximately 18"x24" made of 1/4-3/8" Masonite OR 3/8-1/2" sealed plywood would be helpful to you if you want to continue to work on your painting at home. There are some to loan.

Cost: $75. Will include demos, discussion, and lists of materials, loose experiments with basic and novel techniques, materials, & approaches. If time permits, finish with a small painting from your photo or your imagination (although this course is for beginners, it is a good refresher for advanced students and teachers). Register!

Value and Color (Intro to Watercolor is a must)

Cost: $75. There will be structured exercises to better understand color and value (layering color to achieve different values, application of color for even washes, blending color on wet paper) plus handouts on color characteristics. Demos will include achieving dark values, finishing touches and fixing mistakes. Finish with 1/2 sheet painting from your photo if time permits. BEGINNING WOODCUTS - Phillip Parotti
Monday, March 8 & Monday, March 15, 5:00 - 7:00pm
$35, materials are separate, except for wood block. Stop in for supplies list. The first class will cover types of woods that may be used for woodcuts, design ideas, transferring designs from paper to wood block, cutting techniques, safety, and some hands on work in cutting the block. By the end of this period, the student should have reached a point where he or she will have a good idea about how to make a woodcut on his or her own time. Some students will be able to begin their woodcuts during the class, and the plan is for each student to finish the woodcut prior to the 2nd class meeting. The second class will cover printing. This will include demonstrations of printing methods and individual guidance. If time permits, some discussion of making color woodcuts will be introduced. Register!

ELI SORENSENONE BOWL - Eli Sorensen

Cost: $65, materials included. In many cultures an individual will own one bowl in their lifetime. This bowl will hold food and drink, it may be used for the gathering and preparation of remedies, teas and offerings; or plasters for the walls, this same bowl may hold a newborns bath and serve you or you loved ones during the transition from this life. Consider yourself. One bowl that represents best who you are in this life. What colors and design would your bowl hold? Using a prepared bisque bowl (clay that has been formed and fired and is ready to receive glaze), we'll then design, glaze and fire our bowls. Register!

Cost: $35, materials included. Children's workshop 5-8 year olds. We'll create a plate for your family to share on their very own special day! You can bring it out for birthday cake or Christmas cookies, yum. You might want to celebrate special occasions like winning a game or a race, your part in a play or good grades or to reward a good deed done for others. We'll talk about your ideas for the perfect plate then paint them with glazes, so they can be fired in the kiln, then you can pick them up to take them home to celebrate . . . you might even decide to celebrate having a special plate!

WALL MURAL - Eli Sorensen
Saturday, March 27, 1:00am - 3:00pm
Cost: $85, materials included. Bring along a design concept and your preferred dimensions for tile wall mural or border using 30 -4"x4" tiles (1x30, 2x15, 3x10, 4x7, 5x6 horizontal or vertical). Remember grout will take up about 1/8" between tiles. Additional tile is available along with some trim pieces. We'll transfer your designs then glaze and fire the murals. These easy to apply low fire glazes offer a wide range of technique and color. We will also discuss installation techniques. Register!

TRADITIONAL STILL LIFE with Turid Pedersen

Monday & Fridays, March 29 - April 16th, 10:00am - 1:00pm
Cost: $140, materials separate. This workshop focuses on achieving a strong illusion of three-dimensional objects in space through the use of form -modeling, edge control, and varying depths of focus. Working from a set-up of familiar southwestern objects and artifacts, the class will explore the basic principles of composition, perspective, and other methods of creating the illusion of depth in the world of still life. Attention will be given to rendering various textures with both precision and selectivity to avoid getting lost in too much detail. Along with technique, the color of the light source (natural or incandescent) and its influence on local colors is to be explored, as well as how to give more life and vibrancy to subtle earth tones of the objects in the set-up. Pocket Sketching Workshop with Kath Macauley
April 10,11, & 12, 10:00am - 4:00pm
Cost: $295, materials separate. Using a very small format (4"x6") and very inexpensive materials, anyone can learn to create watercolor sketches of excellent quality, anywhere. Unleash your creativity and awareness. FOR TRAVEL THIS IS A PERFECT WAY TO ADD FAR MORE PLEASURE BY INTERACTING WITH THE LOCALE. It is ideal for journaling and capturing your trip through your own eyes rather than the lens of a camera. Sketches take about 25 minutes and can be done in any location, from ship cruises to standing in line. The results are delightful. No previous experience is needed. Experience will be gained in landscape, still life and people sketching. Register!

Cost: $140, Both beginners and advanced individuals learn from instruction covering various techniques as well as a wide range of materials. I will be teaching you about grouts and adhesives, recycling your finds from the dumpster, thrift shops, picque assiette (recycled china), tiles and glass. Bring life to discarded or personal mementos by creating something unique and beautiful. Make this a "memory" piece. Start collecting your tiles and found objects NOW! You will learn: how to use nippers and cut and shape ceramic and glass into tesserae, how to set shards of varied thickness, the proper setting and grouting of mosaics, tricks of the trade! You will have knowledge to continue creating mosaics on your own! Come with an idea in mind for your imagery-anything from realistic, abstract, decorative or find inspiration from your found art and memory objects. Make it simple, since 2 days are difficult to get a lot finished. The teacher will supply a 12 x 12 cement board for you to create a 2-dimensional finished mosaic suitable for exterior use. This can be framed by you and used as a table piece or wall piece. OR, you may want to bring in a terra cotta ceramic bowl, or a terra cotta pot that you want to mosaic. Other items of interest are: stepping-stones-round or square, bird houses or bird baths, spirit houses or address signs…lots of ideas. Almost anything can be a mosaic art piece. Register!

Mary Frances DondelingerDRYPOINT: DOWN AND DIRTY - Mary Frances Dondelinger

Cost: $130. Some materials included. Learn the quick and easy method of drypoint on plexiglass in this introductory course. Students will create their own image on plexiglass and then produce a small edition of single color prints. Experimentation encouraged. Bio: MF Dondelinger recently took time off from her egg tempera painting to do a residency in Seattle with printmaker Steve MacFarlane where she experimented with drypoint on plexiglass. Her artwork is in numerous public, private, and corporate collections including the Hewlett Packard Permanent Collection, Idaho Power Co., City of Kent, SAFECO Insurance Co., Swedish Hospital Permanent Collection, and University of Washington Hospital Permanent Collection among others. She is the recipient of a NEA Fast Track Grant from the Idaho Commission on the Arts for her exhibition "A Place Called Ferdinand" and a NEA Professional Development Grant from Washington State Art Commission. Ampersand Art Supply has provided sponsorship for her participation in the Florence Biennale in Italy in December 2007. Register!
